Our top 10 make-up tips

If you get spots, it's easy to get down about your appearance and to try to compensate by using too much make-up or even avoiding going out altogether. Don't! - paying a bit of attention to the make-up you use and how you use it can make a real difference. Here are ten top tips from celebrity make-up artist Charlotte Reid:

Our top 10 make-up tips

Make sure your foundation is an exact match...

...to your skin - when you apply a streak it should be invisible. When you're trying in the shop, ask for a mirror and walk to the door to see if the colour looks as good in natural light as it does in artificial light, or bring a little pot and get a sample to take home.

Don't wear too much foundation...

...layering it on too thickly never looks good, so keep it natural. And don't forget, your skin colour changes in summer and winter so you may need different shades of foundation for different times of year.

Try using a green-tinted concealer...

...underneath your foundation if you have reddish spots, as this will help to balance out the colour and take the redness down.

Use a concealer brush...

...instead of your fingers and to avoid transferring grease from your fingers onto your face.

Go for brown or navy...

...eyeliner or mascara sometimes to soften your look.

Don't overdo it with blusher...

...and only apply it where you naturally blush (on the apples of your cheeks).

Match cheeks and lips...

...i.e. don't use pink lipstick and bronze cheek colour.

Emphasise your eyes...

...drawing attention to one area can take the focus off another. Don't go overboard in the day, but go for it with a smoky-eyed sultry look at night!

Go for what suits...

...your colouring and personality instead of what's in fashion, and just pick up on the trends that work for you.

Always...

...take your make-up off before you go to bed. It's easy to be lazy about it, but thoroughly cleansing your skin gets rid of the daily build-up of grime that can clog pores and can lead to spots.

Freederm gel and Freederm Treatment gel contain nicotinamide for the treatment of spots. Always read the label.
